Foreign students may pass the international Russian language state exam - TORFL (Test of Russian as a Foreign Language). Not every university asks for a certificate upon admission, but having one will be a significant advantage. In addition, a certificate is required if a foreigner is going to live and work in Russia.
In total, there are six levels of Russian language proficiency. In our Department, you can get a certificate from the TORFL -1 level and above.
A1 (TEL / elementary level) - satisfies elementary communication needs when communicating with native speakers in a minimal set of situations.
A2 (TBL / basic level) - fulfills the most essential communication needs when communicating with native speakers in a limited number of predictable situations. This level is required to obtain Russian citizenship or work permit.
B1 (TORFL-I / first certification level) - provides basic communication needs when communicating with native speakers in social and socio-cultural spheres. With this level, you can enter a Russian-speaking university or get a job that does not require a deep knowledge of the language.
B2 (TORFL-II / second level) - allows you to conduct professional activities in Russian as a specialist in humanitarian, engineering and technical, natural science profiles. This level is obtained by foreign graduates of undergraduate and graduate programs.
C1 (TORFL-III / third level) - allows you to conduct professional activities in Russian as a philologist, interpreter, editor, journalist, diplomat, manager working in a Russian-speaking team.
C2 (TORFL -IV / fourth level) - covers all communicative needs of the speaker, allows you to conduct scientific activities as a specialist in the Russian language.
The exam lasts two days and generally takes 3.5-5 hours, depending on the level. It consists of five subtests:
Vocabulary and grammar;
Reading;
Listening;
Writing;
Speaking.
The certificate is issued if all subtests are passed at 66% and higher. Each examinee can only retake one subtest. The TORFL certificate has no expiration date.
Examinees can take preparatory courses at our Department to get acquainted with the structure of the exam, typical tasks and review the material necessary to successfully pass the exam.
